Understanding the Audio Capabilities and Limitations of the AXION-X
The AXION-X is a versatile matrix switcher with configurable audio outputs and advanced video distribution capabilities. However, it has specific limitations regarding eARC and audio return. This article provides an overview of its audio features, limitations, and solutions for managing audio return.
Audio Outputs on the AXION-X
The audio connectors located at the top of the AXION-X unit are audio outputs. These outputs can be configured to:
Extract audio from the HDMI inputs.
Extract audio from the source routed to the HDMI outputs.
Be set to a matrixable configuration for flexible routing.
eARC Support
The AXION-X does not support eARC. Users requiring eARC functionality will need to use additional equipment, such as an eARC extender kit, to achieve this capability.
Audio Return Limitations and Solutions
The AXION-X and other HDBaseT matrices in this lineup do not natively support audio return, including over the HDBaseT link. To manage audio return, users can consider the following solutions:
Using Audio Return Extender Kits
eARC Extender Kit: Use the AC-AEX-DEARC-KIT to extend eARC from the TV back to the equipment rack.
TOSLINK Extender Kit: Use the AC-AEX-KIT to accept a TOSLINK output from the TV and provide TOSLINK or RCA output at the rack.
Alternative Video Distribution Systems
For users requiring native audio return support, consider using the MXNet Evolution 2 line, which supports audio return as part of its video distribution system.
Additional Notes
If using HDBaseT extenders with AXION-X, audio return must be handled separately using one of the extender kits mentioned above.
The AC-MX-88 or AC-MX-1616 matrices, paired with extender kits like the AC-EX40-444-PLUS-KIT or AC-EX100-444-KIT, can also support audio return.
Summary
While the AXION-X offers configurable audio outputs, it does not support eARC or native audio return. Users can manage these limitations by using dedicated audio return extender kits or opting for alternative systems like the MXNet Evolution 2 line for native audio return support.
